internet marketing sales

Why Not Use PayPal? Really, Why Not?

I’ve walked the online sales path myself and with numerous clients. Here’s the scenario: You know you have an opportunity to collect payments online and you’ve either heard the voice of authority tell you to get a shopping cart or maybe you’ve been bombarded with all the online ads for the latest hot deal for a shopping cart.

Shopping carts are a “must-have” for only 2 reasons:   You are doing a high volume of sales (their reporting is usually better than PayPal) or, you are selling a large variety of products with multiple options – for example a box of 20 golf balls in orange with blue stripes, or a box of 30 golf balls in blue with orange stripes.

My recommendation of PayPal comes out of experience. I’m not a paid affiliate. That said, PayPal is perfect for the entrepreneur who is testing online sales; let’s get past the top 3 objections to PayPal.

  1. I can’t get my money out of PayPal.  I’ve heard this from several clients and it’s a common misconception. As a business user, Paypal requires that you complete all the information, including providing a business checking account. They also require that you confirm your account my accepting a deposit.
  2. Customer’s have to “join” PayPal.  This is so yesterday! Customers no longer have to be members of PayPal to make a payment. Customers can happily use their own credit card through
  3. But Paypal will charge me for every sale I make. Yes, PayPal will charge you and the percentage per transaction is higher than using a merchant account with a shopping cart. HOWEVER, and this is the big decision point for solo-entreprenuers, PayPal will likely be cheaper than paying a monthly fee AND a per sale transaction charge too.
