Using A Meme In A WordPress Blog Post

meme
This year “meme” was added to the Webster Dictionary (read more in Time). The definition sounds pretty grandiose to use an image to spread an idea “from person to person within a culture.” In a nutshell, it’s simply saying that the image communicates an idea through sharing. So why not use memes in your blog posts to share your message?

Meme Do’s

A meme doesn’t have to be as cheeky as an ancient alien, simply adding text to an image enhances the impact of a photo and can help direct people to adopt a thought or take action. The 2 best ideas for memes are…

  • DO add a hashtag – to embrace an idea and promote a thought
  • DO add your web address – to direct people to your website or a page on your website

Meme Don’ts

I recommend not making your meme too “pitchy”, that means don’t go for the hard sale. That means

  • DON’T plaster your logo on the image
  • DON’T make it look like a special or offer, that’s a coupon not a meme
  • DON’T be pitchy, but also don’t be preachy– keep it light

Don’t over think it. Some memes work, some don’t. Use your Google Analytics account to see if your meme is effective in moving people to where you want them to go.

Design to Spec can help create a meme or a stash of memes for you to use on your posts. Call or email Vanessa if you’re ready to enhance your online business sharing.
