I Know @Oprah and Me are Twitter Birds of A Feather

Oprah Winfrey is on the short list of women in media who seem to never sleep. She’s everywhere at all hours of the day and night. I bet you’d be surprised to find that there is one area of media where she’s just not as involved: Twitter. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have followers… almost 3 and a half million people follow Oprah on Twitter. She just doesn’t tweet very often. Few tweets are an indication that Oprah does her own tweeting rather hiring an assistant to do all of her tweets. Here’s how Oprah and I are following the same flight path on Twitter.

1. Although we both embrace social media, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to Twitter. When Oprah gets busy there is often about 2 weeks between tweets. Oprah’s got TV and “O” magazine, I’ve got my web design and marketing business and my blog. We’re successful because we’ve got focus. Oprah’s got Steadman and I’ve got the husband, one adult child and an grade school aged child. Oprah honey, I understand that there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all!

2. Oprah has been on a spiritual journey for years, many of her guests and their philosophies encourage one to live in the moment. For the same reason I don’t video my child’s big moments (put down the camera and truly be there!), Tweeting can prevent you from being present in the moment. Could it be that Oprah is enjoying life’s moments rather than tweeting during them?

3. Mrs. W (that’s me) and probably Ms. W (Oprah) both recognize that Twitter is a tool in our social media tool belt… not the end all and be all of all media. It’s an option. If you can make it work for you then by all means use it. It doesn’t fit with your communication style, your business model, your audience, or how you spend your time… then focus less on Twitter and put your efforts into what works for you.

When you choose to work with Design to Spec, I’ll help you get the most out of your social media even if you’re living a big Oprah-life.
