TIP: Serving Up the Little Pink Spoon!

At one time or another we’ve all wanted to sample the newest ice cream flavor before we buy. Who can resist the little pink spoon from one nationwide chain. What is the little pink spoon in marketing terms? It’s the free sample served up as the smallest of tasty morsels. A cost-effective goodwill jesture. Just enough to give the customer a taste of the flavor and just enough to entice the customer to want more! It’s the enticement to make the purchase.

Wow, that much in such a little pink spoon!

Seth Godin, author of Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable  challenges business owners to find the puple cow that makes their business unique. I’m challenging clients to employ an internet marketing tool– put a pink spoon on their website.

What defines a pink spoon as an internet marketing tool?

  1. It’s Free.  Not discounted, not a small portion at lower price, not a coupon… F-R-E-E.
  2. It’s Your Best. It should never be old, used, worn, stale, etc. It should always be your best quality, the quality your clients or customers should expect in working with you or purchasing from you.
  3. It Creates a Craving for More. Combined with it being your best, it should also be small. If you deliver everything desired in one give-away what motivates the desire for more? It would be like getting a big double decker cone instead of a small spoon sample– What’s the motivation to buy more?!

So, what pink spoon would you put on your website? Here are some ideas:

  • Form. Any form that solves a problem and makes life easier for the user is a good form.
  • Calculator.
  • Training Video.
  • Offer for a FREE session, class, etc. Let them sample before they buy.
  • Download. MP3 download of a music sample, class, podcast, etc.
